Coming From the Subway is an exhibition (4th Oct 1992- 10th Jan. 1993) in the Groninger Museum, Groningen, the Netherlands. It is the first time that a large special exhibition of graffiti art from the eighties up to the present can be seen in Europe. The artists taking part are: A-One, Blade, Bill Blast, Crash, Daze, Dondi White, Futura 2000, Keith Haring, Koor, Lady Pink, Lee, Noc 167, Phase 2, Quik, Rammellzee, Seen, Toxic, Zephyr. On the occasion of the exhibition a 320-page book will be published, with 270 colour illustrations. Certain aspects of graffiti are discussed by various authors: Stefan Eins, Steven Hagen, Froukje Hoekstra, Henk Pijnenburg, Yasmin Ramirez, Johannes Stahl, Jack Stewart, Greg Tate. There is an extensive essay on the history and development of graffiti. Other aspects which are dealt with are: the interaction between graffiti, dance, fashion and music; the resistance graffiti encountered; and the transition from subway writer to artist-painter. The book contains interviews with graffiti artists, and quotes by museum directors, gallery owners, and collectors.
