Street Art, as its name suggests, encompasses all artistic incursions made on the urban landscape. It is directly derived from the graffiti that was painted in the late 1960s on train cars in Harlem, New York. Its philosophy and its raison d’être have evolved, as with all arts and artistic movements, according to the socio-political and cultural changes that society has undergone.
However, its essence is intact (transgression and rejection of the system). Many artists refer to this evolving movement as “Post Graffiti”. The new concept of this urban art refuses the possibility of confining itself to the form of graffiti in a single setting, which would be that of the walls of factories located on the outskirts of cities. Its nature is much broader than it was 30 years ago. One could even speak of a “renaissance” through an explosion of creativity, new ideas and the talent of thousands of artists from all over the world who display their innovative works of art in the streets, using them as a gigantic museum.
As in any evolution, Street Art or Post Graffiti has obviously brought new techniques and styles. Thus, in addition to paint cans and indelible markers, artists use other ways and other materials to make their work: stencils, stickers, posters, acrylic paint applied with a brush, airbrush, chalk, charcoal, collages made from photographs, photocopies, mosaics, etc.
