Since emerging from New York and Philadelphia in the early 1970s, the colourful and stylised lettering and figures of what became known as “graffiti” has conquered the urban centres of our world. Accompanied by acrobatic dance, scratched vinyl and rhythmic rhyme, this fledgling cultural virus reached Zurich at the beginning of the 80s.
The book Zee City tells the exclusive story of writing and features first-hand accounts of the development of breakdancing and DJing in Zurich. Through often frank and insightful self-written texts, selected representatives of the genre provide insight into the secrets, motivations and operations of this contemporary cultural form. In addition, a series of small chapters provide a brief historical review. Featuring a selection of the most important and best works, from the very first sprayed walls, all the way to today’s highly professionalised form of trainbombing, the book shows how this phenomenon developed from its beginnings in the 80s to around 2010.
