A Question of Style: Graffiti Writing Between Theory and Practice in Rome, edited by Ilaria Hoppe and Egidio Emiliano Bianco. The book takes shape from the need to introduce the field of research on Graffiti Writing in the Italian academic context, in which it seems not to have met with complete recognition so far. The central theme is style, a controversial concept in writing, revered and rejected at the same time. The idea and narration of style in Graffiti Writing (or style writing) has many elements in common with the traditional notion of style in art history. What are the points of contact in this regard? The theme is explored with methods of analysis of visual culture through books and photographic publications, which have always been a fundamental visual source for writing, orienting the taste and choices of the writers through their selections. Writing has for many years been a form of international creativity that, within its aesthetic phenomena, negotiates locally and globally as spheres of influence. This further aspect is addressed by the book through the analysis of different global and local aesthetics, with an eye to the style of graffiti in Rome. The book presents essays by international scholars and local writers who propose their contribution between theory and practice, local and global, art and narration of style, in an unprecedented comparison between art history and the world of Writing.
A Question of Style: Graffiti Writing Between Theory and Practice
This volume presents the contributions of the conference held in Rome at the Museo Laboratorio Arte Contemporanea (MLAC) of La Sapienza University in April 2022. International scholars and experts in the field of graffiti writing gathered here as well as well-known Roman and Milanese writers for intense discussions and exchanges. Texts and images present today’s research and answer the question of style between the two apparently distant but somehow interconnected fields of art history and graffiti writing.
EGIDIO EMILIANO BIANCO studied art history, art and cultural management in Milan. He is currently a PhD student at KU Linz, with a thesis on writing in Rome. His passion and specialization for urban arts has led to a wide range of activities, including contributions to magazines, books, lectures and exhibitions, as well as his current work for the auction platform Catawiki.
ILARIA HOPPE is Professor of Art History and Visual Culture at KU Linz. Previously, he worked at Humboldt University in Berlin. There he began his research on street art and graffiti, starting with the very first academic seminar on the subject in 2007.
