“… and it did BOOM”, you could summarize the development of hip-hop in Germany in recent years. Since its emergence at the block parties in New York in the late 1970s, the genre has continuously developed, spread to the world and has been nationalized as a cultural form in many European countries. The book HipHop XXL – Fette Reime und Fette Beats in Deutschland, which emerged from a cooperation between MTV and the Goethe Institute, gives an inventory of a process that is actually only really gaining momentum. Ever since the Old School of Advanced Chemistry proved that German is a great language for HipHop and that the message was conveyed to the public, and especially since the Charter successes of the Fantastic Four, HipHop has become a permanent factor in German culture.
The art form HipHop is conveyed with pictures, rap lyrics, but also examples on two CDs and even with sheet music, the design by Klaus Mai alias KM7 conveys the spirit of culture excellently. The main focus is on the rappers, their lyrics and the music, the sprayers, on the other hand, go down a bit, the dancers are noted on the side. Nevertheless, the book is suitable as an introduction to the subject, both the fan and the ignorant are given a good introduction to hip-hop lifestyle in Germany. – Wolfram Denzer
“HipHop in Germany has developed into a culture with its own strong identity and codes in all four disciplines – and above all the sustainability and the potential that lies in this development is what the artists should be proud of this book has been a great snapshot of the hip hop lifestyle at the beginning of the new millennium. ”
Christiane zu Salm, MTV boss
“HipHop XXL is the combination of a fat book with a double audio CD of the best German chants from the Fantastischen Vier to Freundeskreis to Fettes Brot. In addition to a short history of rap from the beginning to the present, as well as 150 band and scene photos, the book also contains all one thing: lyrics and beats of numerous hip hop songs. ”
