Martha Cooper offers 16 postcards of her beloved New York. With her trusty Nikon, she has documented memorable moments in the city since the 70s: she was there when the town was bankrupt and the crime rate high, and had a front seat as graffiti and hip hop culture developed and Keith Haring began his career on the city streets. She now occupies a post-9/11, gentrified New York, and reserves the same love for the city, its culture and its people. Postcards from New York City is a journey through time, the development of street culture and the city’s soul. The cards have been carefully selected from Cooper’s thousands of pictures, and some are previously unpublished.
Martha Cooper is a documentary photographer who has specialized in shooting urban vernacular art and architecture for more than thirty years. With her over twenty books and countless exhibitions around the world, she is one of the most important portrayers of street life and urban culture today. Her previous books include Subway Art, Tag Town, Hip Hop Files, New York State of Mind and Going Postal. She lives in Manhattan.
