Kilometres & photography: Wladimir Manshanden
“On Google Maps it looked easier than with ten liters of latex in your hand, hard to find man this place at that junction. I had two sticks taped together but even with that I couldn’t get to the top. I had to do the last letter from above. So in the summer it was light again early, so at one point the trucks started to honk because I was in good view there in that bend. Time to go. I left my stuff there and went back two weeks later for the finishing touches.”
In the late 1990s, Wladimir Manshanden (53) fanatically applied his graffiti alias along the A2, A58, A16 and A67 highways. From Amsterdam to Maastricht, from Venlo to Antwerp, from Eindhoven to Dordrecht.
Twenty years later, he strikes again, this time in a different car. Equipped with a Canon G3x and a handheld tripod, he has been shooting highway graffiti. With a plan, that is; the hunting grounds are the Netherlands on and under the A1. The square between Amsterdam, Apeldoorn, Maastricht and Vlissingen that is.
His opinion on graffiti? Individual graffiti makers are not necessarily artists, the better highway writers are both sporty and good craftsmen. He is very enthusiastic about graffiti as a modern art movement and sociological and social phenomenon. With this photography project, he wants to honor the boys who do their work at their own expense and risk, night and day.
