Seen is probably the most famous writer in the history of graffiti. In the 1983 documentary “Style Wars”, he already starred as a legendary figure who was facing probation. In the film produced by Tony Silver and Henry Chalfant, the name Seen is presented as the Bronx’s most prolific and probably the most productive in all of New York during his active period. However, the information that corresponds to the emblem he is only gives us a slight idea of what the name meant to the MTA.
In ‘They Call Me The Godfather of Graffiti’, Richard Miranda forges the legend of Seen by summarizing the period and gathering together his most active time on the metro which dates back from 1973 to 1981.
Throughout its 292 pages there are a large quantity of pieces produced during different periods. Some have already become graffiti history classics, and others are completely exclusive. Analogue photographs in different formats, original sketches accompanied by notes, documents and utensils of the era are mixed into a very complete published work of art that also features contributions by famous graffiti artists such as Os Gemeos, Claw Money, Shepard Fairey, or TATS Crew.
The presentation and format of the book are perfectly suited to the importance of the material in its interior. The fact that the cover reads, “Chapter 1973-1981” makes us think about the probability of ‘They Call Me The Godfather of Graffiti’ acquiring continuity.
The long awaited book on ‘da original Bronx bomber’ doesn’t disappoint at all and becomes an indispensable piece on the shelf of any graffiti book collector or lover. It’s noteworthy to say that this publication has been released in a limited edition of 1000 copies worldwide which is bound to make it a collector’s item. Text by MTN-WORLD.COM
