Under the title “Unseen Pieces”, the book by the Berlin graffiti writer SKENAR 73 takes us to deserted places and conveys the author and artist’s very personal and at times intimate view of graffiti. The title of the book, which is limited to five hundred copies, originally referred to a video series that SKENAR 73 initiated together with his fellow writer NEKTAR. The latter accompanied the artist and took on the roles of cameraman and director. The book “Unseen Pieces” not only shows the pieces that can already be seen in the videos. The publication primarily documents such works by SKENAR 73 that none of us normally get to see that easily would. On the one hand, this is due to the fact that it remains unclear where they were painted. Another reason is the fact that most of the pieces have not yet been released. There is no major publisher behind the publication. The publication of the book is thanks to a crowdfunding campaign, the design was done independently and the printing was done in Germany. The reader can expect largely unpublished images that document pieces that were created between 2010 and 2017. Except for a few words that inform about the idea and the execution of the book and its pieces, the author lets the images speak for themselves. Glossy paper was not used. The recordings look straightforward, grainy and natural. Elaborate lighting control was avoided. The photographs therefore skillfully capture the current materiality and the prevailing weather conditions of the forgotten places where SKENAR 73 left its pieces. The images reflect the exploration of the lost places as well as the creation processes of some works. Dampness, decay, silence and loneliness are palpable. “Unseen Pieces” therefore has its very own unadulterated and somewhat rough seeming charm and should therefore not be missing in any ambitious graffiti library!
