Munich 1983, the walls are untouched. Political sayings and messages of love occasionally adorn the grey. Suddenly, abstract characters, strange figures, and cryptic combinations of letters appear, of which no one knows what they mean. They spread in the cityscape and mark the beginning of the graffiti movement in Germany and Europe. The photographs from the archives of the criminal defense lawyer Konrad Kittl and anthropology academic Peter Kreuzer show the first layer of graffiti in Munich: experiments with color and form, unprecedented and free from rules or preconceptions.
” ZAR ZIP FLY ZORO gets to the bottom of the art form. Because Munich was a role model around 1985: at that time, the first graffiti is emerged in Munich, which was more than confessions of love or frantic scribbles.
The criminal defense attorney Konrad Kittl captured many of these first works of art. Through research, Klick Klack Publishing came across it: “It was not clear to us that he had such a large, large, well-sorted archive. That surprised us,” says Roman from the publisher.
Another part of the photographs in the book are by Peter Kreuzer, a colleague of Kittl,’ who himself at the same time began to take the pictures and gave graffiti lectures at the Volkshochschule. Together they founded the EGU (European Graffiti Union), which stood up for the interests of the sprayers and made a great contribution to the development of the scene.
In addition to the first “pieces ” of this time, there are also philosophical texts in the book that embed the images in a context. The exciting thing about graffiti art in children’s shoes is not least the impartiality of the artists, who visualized the zeitgeist and mood in their paintings.”- JOHANNA ROLLEMILLER
