Alphabeatz is all about the 26 letters of the alphabet. Starting at the graffiti-scene’s roots, NYC in the 70s, Woshe sheds light on the letters of the alphabet, their structure and how different writers used them. Many illustrations and photographs underscore the narrative visually. Woshe also speaks to ten graffiti artists directly: you can read interviews with BATES, DARCO, DEMS, LOKISS, SERCH, ZOER, GESER, JURNE, SWET and SYE.
Graffiti writing was born on the streets of Philadelphia in the late 1960s. But it was in the New York of the early 1970s that it became an urban art in its own right, gradually taking possession of the city’s landscape, from the walls to the subway cars. From these years of emergence, the pioneers of graffiti laid the foundations: a perpetual game with the 26 letters of the alphabet, abused, stretched and highlighted in the pseudos painted on the walls.
Passionate about graffiti for over 25 years, Woshe tells us the incredible story of the birth of this culture. He then invites us to a detailed examination of the 26 letters of the alphabet, their structure and the changes that writers can bring to them. Multiple examples illustrate this study, complemented by that of the enrichments that can be added to the letters themselves. Finally, 10 of the most talented creators on the international scene answer Woshe’s questions about their practice, their relationship to letters, their cultural references, etc. with sincerity and commitment.
Alphabeatz is at the same time a writing manual, an inspiring suggestion box, a beautiful book on the world of graffiti, but above all a declaration of love to this culture that mixes urban performance and mastery of the letter.
