The book Pretty Zeecity retrospective arose from the need to use historical visual material from the beginnings of graffiti art in the Zurich area and accessible to the public to make. It is based on a very personal review of the What was experienced at that time and is in this respect one shaped by one’s own perception Retrospective without claim to completeness or objectivity. The book sees itself as part of a whole, as a fragment to complement already of published works, which are also dedicated to documentation and historical reappraisal of Zurich’s street art. The works and Memories recorded in it bear witness to experiences that can definitely be described as not commonplace.
The whole story takes place in the last millennium, shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall and at the end of apartheid in South Africa, early 90s. The Second Gulf War and others geopolitical conflicts dominated the day-to-day media events. The music of Prince, Jackson, Madonna or the GunsN’ Roses ran on all channels and provided the soundtrack for a society that was on the threshold of the analogue to the digital world. In the city of Zurich, Easter was still the order of the day Dancing ban, the S-Bahn just started its operation, and the sponsorship of Graffiti writers were about as far-fetched as the bratwurst in a vegan Snack stand. Hip-hop had something raw about it and for me – next to “Star Wars” – it was the inspiring universe par excellence.- Planet Rock – T273
