A ‘black-book’ presenting a visual journey through 25 years of sketching and pure dedication, providing insight in a personal approach.

The book is independently published in a limited edition of 750 signed and numbered books. The format resembles the original Canson classic sketchbook edition (A5 and hard black cover, stitch bound) and is printed in black and white on 115 grms. ‘Munken white’ counting 220 pages. A special feature are the 20 manually added color photos alongside the original sketches.

Zedz’s first book demonstrates a cut through of 25 years of writing and graffiti styling. The book follows the format of a writer’s blackbook; which for many is the first, and by far the most important, book that they will create while being active ‘outside’. Blackbook Unveiled provides insight into the process and development of Zedz, it does this by highlighting periods and underlining key steps in the design process.
The majority of the book’s content derives directly from sketchbooks in which most of the development took shape. It is the mindset of research and the restless quest for originality within the mainly typographic based graffiti, which makes the work interesting and ensures that it stands out.

Many of the sketches presented in the unveiled blackbook served as the basis for actual street graffiti, while he more sophisticated drawings and ideas led up to work outside of the pure graffiti context. The blackbook shows Zedz’s fascination with readable letters, isometry and dimensional typography (1994-1997), while not breaking with the more hardcore and essence of graffiti principles.

Graffiti, for Zedz, is about breaking rules. This is both by graffiti’s illegal nature, and by destroying the graffiti format, researchig parameters and crossing confining lines. This exploration over time led to a level of abstraction (2003) which is clearly present in Zedz’s work outside of graffiti. The blackbook tells a story without words about a quest for perfection and the journey of a true style master piecer.

The book follows the visual fomat of the Canson ‘Classic Sketchbook’, the book in which Zedz has drawn most of his ‘outlines’. The book counts 220 pages and is printed on high quality design paper (115 grms. ‘Munken white’), which resembles the look and touch of the paper in the classic sketchbooks. The print is in black and white resembling most closely the original sketches that were often executed in pen or pencil, with additional colour photographs of pieces added emphasising the manual process of applying them to personal sketchbooks. Organised in a chronological order, the book sometimes speeds up and rushes through a period of time, while at other points in time it slows down and becomes to a halt to highlight personal development.
