“Break The Limits” is the title of Denmark’s first English-language hip hop music release. The year is 1988.
Behind the music release “Break The Limits” are strong Aalborg forces, Soulshock and Doctor Jam, also known as Carsten Schack and Henrik Milling, who today are known for their great musical production, knowledge and communication within music in international and national contexts.
When hip hop swept across Europe from the United States in the early 80s, the innovative forces of culture in music, dance and graphics were received with great enthusiasm by thousands of creative young souls who could not find their place within the existing cultural framework. With hip hop, the opportunity arose to express oneself in a unified culture through rap, breakdance, electric boogie, graffiti and DJ’ing.
Despite Aalborg’s modest size as Denmark’s 4th largest city, the city stands in some circles as the second most important city in the development of hip hop culture in Denmark. The city has been the setting for many creative souls and recognized artists such as Soulshock, Henrik Milling, Raske Penge, Jonny Hefty and many others who today make a name for themselves on the country’s cultural scene.
This book is an account of the hip hop environment as it unfolded in Aalborg in the years 1984-1990.
“It’s development is similar to Hip Hop in other Western European countries. The book is compiled with great care and packed with photo material. Expect lots of graffiti, electric boogie, breaking and DJ-ing, flyers and fashion, taking you back to memory lane. A nice piece of Hip Hop history on Denmark’s 4th biggest city. It is sad to know that Anders Bak, known in the scene as Modash, died in a housefire shortly after the release- TimSki
